PHP MySQL Marketplace Architecture Matching Logic B2B Platform
The Client

Plenty of Processors is a B2B marketplace designed to match merchants with payment processing solutions that fit their specific business type, transaction volume, and industry vertical. Payment processing is a fragmented industry where most merchants have no way to compare options — Plenty of Processors was built to change that.

The Challenge

The founders had a clear problem to solve and a clear business model, but no technical infrastructure. They needed a custom platform — not a generic directory, not a form that emails someone — that could handle merchant profiling, solution matching, and introductions in a structured, repeatable way.

Goals
  • Build a merchant intake and profiling system
  • Develop matching logic that connected merchant profiles to appropriate processors
  • Create a processor-side interface for managing availability and criteria
  • Build an admin view for overseeing matches and outcomes
  • Design an experience that made a complex industry feel approachable to merchants
Process

How we built it.

The matching model was designed collaboratively with the founders, who knew the industry criteria that determined fit. Those criteria were translated into a structured data model that allowed merchant profiles and processor criteria to be compared systematically rather than manually.

The merchant intake flow was built as a guided multi-step form — breaking a complex set of questions into manageable stages while collecting the precise data needed for accurate matching. Each question was written to be understood by merchants with no industry knowledge.

Processor profiles included their actual eligibility criteria, restricted industries, and preferred merchant types — entered and updated through a custom admin interface. When a merchant completed intake, the matching system evaluated all active processors and surfaced the relevant options.

Outcomes

What changed.

The platform gave the Plenty of Processors team a scalable way to handle merchant-processor matching without manual coordination at the intake stage. Merchants moved through the process independently, and the team's involvement was focused on the stages where human judgment actually mattered.

York's Take
"Marketplace architecture always has interesting edge cases — what happens when no processors match? What happens when a merchant changes their business type mid-process? I built in state handling for these scenarios from the start, which saved a lot of retrofitting. The intake form UX was the part I spent the most time on — it had to feel simple despite collecting 30+ data points."
